Images of aid workers getting things done in the toughest environments rarely include the humble IT technician. Yet making sure aid agencies get the right supplies on time quickly couldn’t happen without them. Formed in 1995, the Fast Information Technology and Telecommunications Emergency and Support Team (FITTEST) works against the clock to get radio, satellite and internet up and running. Based out of the UN food agency’s Dubai office, FITTEST has set up IT and telecoms infrastructure in 130 countries in the aftermath of war or disaster. Here’s how:
