International Women's Day 2015: closing the gap

Gains towards women's equality have been lamentably slow

In 1995, delegates and world leaders at the Beijing Conference on Women made the landmark pledge that human rights are women's rights, and women's rights are human rights.

Twenty years on, the actions that arose from that meeting have guided interventions towards achieving full equality for women and girls. The successes have been many, but in other areas, the gains towards this laudable goal have been lamentably slow.

Today, on International Women's Day 2015, we remember why gender equality counts - not just for women, but for the world.
